How To Use Aripiprazole

Oral aripiprazole comes in the form of a tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, tablet with sensor, and liquid solution to take by mouth. You can take this medicine with or without food. Try to take the medicine at around the same time every day.

Read the prescription label carefully. Follow your doctor’s dosing instructions and take aripiprazole exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your doctor’s approval.

If you are taking the orally disintegrating tablets, do not push the tablet through the foil. Rather, peel the foil back with dry hands, immediately place the tablet on your tongue, and allow it to dissolve. You can swallow the dissolved tablet with or without water. Do not split the orally disintegrating tablet.

Your mental health provider may start you on a low dose of aripiprazole and gradually increase the dose based on your response and how well you tolerate the medicine.

Antipsychotic drugs like aripiprazole can help to control your symptoms, but they do not cure the underlying conditions. It can take two weeks or longer for you to get the full benefits of this medication. Continue taking aripiprazole even if you don’t have any symptoms and feel well. Do not stop aripiprazole without talking to your doctor first.

Abilify Mycite (aripiprazole tablet with sensor)

Abilify Mycite tablets contain a sensor inside. They are used to treat major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia in adults. If you are taking Abilify Mycite (tablets with sensors), make sure you swallow them whole. Do not cut, crush, or chew these sensor tablets.

To use the Abilify Mycite tablets correctly, you will need to download a smartphone app and wear a sensor patch just below your ribcage on the left side of your body. This wearable sensor patch should be applied to clean dry skin (avoid skin that is broken, cut, or inflamed). If the wearable sensor causes skin irritation, remove it and call your doctor.

The wearable sensor (patch) detects the medicine in your body 30 minutes to 2 hours after you take a dose. If the app does not register a dose after you take it, call your doctor.

The wearable sensor patch should be changed at least once weekly. The app will remind you when and how to do it. You can keep the patch on while showering and swimming. However, you will need to remove the Abilify Mycite wearable sensor patch if you are having a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.

Aripiprazole injectable forms

Abilify Maintena (aripiprazole) and Aristada (aripiprazole lauroxil) are used to treat adults with schizophrenia (aripiprazole lauroxil is a prodrug that is converted to aripiprazole in the body). These are depot injections (extended-release formulations) that are administered once a month by a healthcare provider into the arm or buttock muscle.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of aripiprazole, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store aripiprazole at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. The orally disintegrating tablets should be stored in the original sealed pack and used immediately after peeling back the foil. The tablets with sensors should be stored at room temperature, away from areas of high humidity. Any unused aripiprazole liquid solution should be discarded on the expiry date or 6 months after opening the bottle, whichever is sooner. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired aripiprazole should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw aripiprazole in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded aripiprazole is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
